so i was hit with a huge bout of inspiration after thinking about what color splash would be like if it had original characters instead of reused mainstream ones and had to put down what i was coming up with because i was starting to really like it. huey can stay because hes the only one who looks like he belongs.
also i really really want nintendo to prove me wrong with my thinking bowsers gonna be the villain
Okay, I need to express some thoughts about the Paper Mario series and how it’s changed in recent years.
I want to start by making it clear that I don’t have anything against the concepts behind the two most recent Paper Mario games. Sticker Star did some really neat and creative things and I can see why they wanted to continue exploring that potential. It’s just a shame they had to get rid of the “old” way in implementing it.
I have nothing against Nintendo trying new things – sometimes that’s completely necessary to make something great! And honestly, Sticker Star isn’t a bad game. But it’s basically started a different kind of “Paper Mario”, where the focus is completely different and the gameplay is its own thing entirely compared with the first two games. It might as well be a separate series. And that’s why people are upset about it, I think, because this “new” Paper Mario format has completely replaced the old one as the standard. I wouldn’t have a problem with it if they hadn’t completely discarded the original Paper Mario style for what might as well be its own series. Adventure games aren’t the same thing as RPGs and fans of one won’t necessarily be fans of the other – I get it. I really do. A lot of the counter-arguments are about RPG fans judging Sticker Star and Color Splash as crappy RPGs, when really they’re adventure games and should be viewed as such. The problem with that is that the series got its popularity because of its RPG elements, which is why fans of the older games are upset. The aspects of the games they loved were removed in favor of completely different sets of mechanics, with new characters being essentially off-limits if they aren’t generic Mario characters. Or I’ve seen people remark that “if you want a Mario RPG, that’s what the Mario & Luigi series is for”. They’ve got some similarities, sure, but they’re still pretty different series.
Basically, the “paper” has become a gimmick rather than a storybook.
ok now it looks like this is going to be much better than sticker star, not that thats at all hard to do
the battle system at least seems to be improved. cards dont seem to get used up for good, only get their colors drained, which you have to repaint before using again. kind of like how you needed fp for certain moves in paper mario 64 and ttyd, and theres even a color gauge to measure how much more you can do that which reinforces the similarity
one of the ways you fill the color gauge appears to be defeating enemies, so theres actually a purpose for fighting them and thats a major improvement over sticker star
we still dont know anything about the story though. the presence of the bowser tape from sticker star suggests he’s going to be the main villain, which would be a disappointment since i loved how ttyd/spm had him either try in vain to prove he’s the Real Bad Guy or actually join your team. i guess there could also be other reasons for his tape to be stuck to things though, and it’s not like pm64′s story wasnt good even without an original villain
Don’t really want to watch the whole video but this is really good to know
Hopefully if Bowser is the villain we’ll at least see some actual writing and personality from him like in the other games.
