ok so there’s a lot of fucked up shit in mother 3 but there’s one particularly fucked up thing that i’m fascinated with: the new pork cinema.

while i was expecting the theater to display a slideshow of images of porky and how cool is he is, i was instead greeted with a bunch of images from earthbound.

which would be creepy on its own except???

i’ve replayed earthbound recently, and tbh, it’s interesting how rather than diminishing with time, my opinion of it improved, instead.

i mean, nostalgia doesn’t have much of a factor in what i like about the mother series or not, seeing as i played all of them one after the other in my teens, so in the end, even though i had enjoyed them all, my favorite of the bunch was always mother 3.

earthbound was charming and fun, but i always found the lack of a cohesive narrative and developed main characters to be disappointing; mother 3 is my favorite precisely because it managed to balance the quirky writing and odd events with a strong plot and a well characterized main cast.

but now… yeah, i don’t see that as a problem, anymore. the lack of a real plot is clearly very inyentional, and it makes way to what is definitely earthbound’s real strength: making it feel like you’re an ordinary suburban kid going on a big, exciting, life-changing adventure. and it really succeeds, imo. earthbound has less story, but way more locations and a noticeable road trip movie vibe to it. there is no plot, because, completely unironically, the real plot is all the friends you make along the way
