Animal Intelligence

Ever notice how they keep moving the goalposts when it comes to animal intelligence vs. human intelligence?

“Humans are completely unique. No other animal uses tools.”

“Actually, wild sea otters have been observed using rocks to open shellfish.”

“Okay, but that’s not true intelligence. They just pick the rocks up; they don’t alter them in any way.”

“Chimps peel the leaves from sticks to make more effective termite probes.”

“Well, that’s just technology. Only humans have art.”

“What about painting elephants? Art critics often can’t tell the difference between their work and a human’s.”

“Okay fine. But only humans have language. That’s the mark of true intelligence.”

“These African Grey Parrots use hundreds of words correctly and even ask original questions.”

“Oh yeah? Well, does any non-human species demonstrate self-awareness?”

“Dolphins pass the mirror test without training.”

“Pfft. How about problem-solving?”

“I can’t keep squirrels out of my bird feeder no matter what I do.”

“Aha! Bet you can’t think of a species that possesses all these traits! Only humans! We’re No. 1! We’re No. 1!”

“Crows.”

“LALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOOOOUUUUUUUUU…”

Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are? by Frans de Waal explores this exact question and its a fascinating read.

Humans had enough trouble seeing other humans as human. We are not even remotely smart enough to know how smart animals are. We would have a huge existential crisis if we realised other creatures are as sentient and aware as we are.

hmmm

Whenever someone posits that people are ‘lazy’ I’m reminded of the fact that if you leave humans in a room with some blocks and no instructions they will literally make up their own tasks to carry out because humans just fuckin love having stuff to do and objectives to work towards

In one of my psych courses we learned about a study where a person was left in a room with nothing but a box that would SHOCK THEM painfully if they touched it. After awhile, everyone touched the box and got shocked to hell and back. Now, this isn’t that abnormal. What’s abnormal is that everyone then sat there for a few minutes and then TOUCHED THE BOX AGAIN. And got shocked AGAIN! Moral of the story: People fucking hate being bored. They would rather be in IMMENSE PAIN than be bored.

Outside of Tumblr, I’ve honestly only ever heard the phrase “boys will be boys“ to mean “boys will be lovable goofballs who do dumb shit to entertain themselves”, not “boys will be rapists”.

And additionally when men are acting like boys.

I’ve mostly heard this phrase after “Hey mom watch this!”

Exactly. “Boys will be boys” has nothing to do with sexual assault and everything to do with:

Be real, though, we were all this kid at *some* point, however briefly. It’s when you don’t *stop* being this way that we have a problem.

I’ve made the observation that 12 to 13-year-olds are in the stage where they think they have the world figured out. Most people accuse teenagers of thinking they know everything but actually most teenagers are keenly aware that they don’t know anything, they’re just putting up a front. When you’re 12 or 13 you legitimately think you have the world figured out because you’re old enough to understand some things for the first time but still young enough to be that dumb. The preteen years contain the biggest ratio of confidence to cluelessness.
