No, no, no… Are they really gonna fuck up this one as well with their shitty alternate universe? Alternate version of Mewtwo from BW not enough for them?
I’m just hoping it isn’t as bad as last time, tbh. Not like that should be hard to avoid.
It appears that Masachika Ichimura will be reprising his role as the voice of Mewtwo in the 2019 Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution. For those unaware, Masachika Ichimura is the original Japanese voice actor for Mewtwo in both Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998) and Mewtwo Returns (2000).
As a huge Mewtwo nerd, I can’t help but wonder what this new movie could possibly be about. The past two films have been reimagined stories of the original Kanto saga (I Choose You) and the second Pokemon movie, Pokemon 2000 (Everyone’s Story), set in an alternative continuity. Will this new Mewtwo movie continue the trend and be a retelling of Mewtwo Strikes Back set in the same alternate timeline/universe? Or will it simply be a re-animated, special edition version of MSB with its original characters? Or is it a completely new Mewtwo sequel?
Some ramblings I can’t help but wonder: why a Mewtwo movie now? If they’re retelling the old movies, wouldn’t Entei – Spell of the Unown be next in line? Are they trying to re-introduce the original Mewtwo character to kids now to line up with the release of Smash Bros. Ultimate in December, which includes him as a fighter? Perhaps they are simply doing something to celebrate MSB’s 20th anniversary? Additionally, the ‘Evolution’ bit gives me pause. Does that insinuate Mewtwo will mega-evolve, much like how Genesect and the Legend Awakened referred to M16 Mewtwo’s evolution into Mega Mewtwo Y? If so, will he turn into Mega Mewtwo X? Is it possible that either Philip Bartlett or Dan Green could make a return to voicing Mewtwo in English…?
Only time will tell, of course. What do you think and what are your theories?
So. Normally, I dislike the route of a story getting a remake or reimagining when something new could be done (with many exceptions where it’s done better or differently enough than the original), but I honestly would be fine with it, assuming the story is good – so many people grew up only knowing Mewtwo’s story as told by the 4kids dub of the first movie – where he’s just a shallow, watered down villain. Essentially the Boris Karloff version of Frankenstein’s monster compared to… well, almost any other version of that story.
Anyway, the dubbing has been a lot more decent in recent years, so I can’t see the english dub just… dumbing down the story like 4kids did. Seeing people introduced to Mewtwo as anything other than a meh “me destroy world because angry” villain would be nice.
An important thing to note, Mewtwo’s first english voice actor, Philip Bartlett, was said to have died in 2001 – the actor’s actual name is Jay Goede (credited under the alias Philip Bartlett) and is very much alive (unless that’s very recently changed)
So to the people saying he couldn’t do the voice acting because he’s dead, well… not exactly.
What I’m really wondering is, if this movie turns out to be some kind of remake of Pokemon the first movie,,, IS THERE ANY CHANCE WE’LL SEE AI AGAIN?!?!!?!
