Many users are reporting massive data loss following the October 2018 Windows 10 update. Personal files are being deleted and hard drives are being corrupted in addition to several performance glitches. Users who have received the update are reporting all of their personal files such as documents, music, pictures, and videos being deleted following the update.

Some people have lost hundreds of gigabytes of data. These files are completely disappearing following the update – they do not wind up in the recycle bin, they are completely gone. Other users are reporting their entire hard drives or SSDs becoming corrupted, making rollback and recovery of said deleted files impossible.

In addition to the file deletion, devices with 6th generation Intel processors and newer are reporting awful battery life and CPU usage following the update.

Long story short, hold off on the October 2018 update for now. There are too many glitches and way too much to lose. If you attempt it,

BACK UP ALL OF YOUR FILES FIRST.

SADLY THOSE BASTARDS MANAGE TO DEACTIVATE MY UPDATE BLOCK ALL THE TIME WHENEVER I DEACTIVATE AUTOMATIC UPDATES

So yeah, I hope they freaking correct it!

This makes me want an external hard drive even more. I can’t even imagine what I’d do if I lost all of my research data at this point, let alone everything else on my computer.

that’s right kiddos, they’re trying to use automatic updates to force your computer to upgrade to win 10.

Which would be fine and dandy if every windows user in the world ran a standard operating environment but they fucking don’t and this will break a lot of computers.

To stop this for win 7:  Go to your control panel, select Windows Updates.  Click on Change Settings.  Pick any option you like except ‘install updates automatically’   (Personally I use “download but let me choose” as M$ has a nasty habit of breaking things with unnecessary patches, but then again I know this shit backwards, so YMMV)

If you’re running win XP: Stop punishing yourself.

Signal boost for anyone who might have this option on.

I don’t, but I elected to upgrade my Surface to 10 and have regretted it. No way in hell I’d want it on my desktop machine.

P.S.: fuck Canon also for refusing to make drivers for slightly older printers on Win10. Win10 acts like it has all the answers drivers, but it doesn’t. Even if you want to upgrade, check printer compatibility before you do or you may end up with devices you can’t use with that computer anymore.

There’s also a third party app called GWX Control Panel that you can use to just stop it.
