Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion, 2000

Bonus: Spooky Scenes

Can I just. The atmosphere in this game is beyond amazing. It’s the subtlety that really does it for me; you know that no matter where you go in this house, something’s not right and you’re not safe. I love that none of these have any big, in-your-face payoff – it’s like, in a horror movie, when the tension is building up and the music is getting creepier and you creepier and creepier and you’re just waiting for something to pop out, except it never does. You’re not allowed to have that feeling of shock and then release; you’re stuck in the suspense the whole time. It’s super-effective and it still works, even though I first played this game 10 or so years ago.

And just, how minor a lot of these things are. So many of them are ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’ moments, things you see out of the corner of your eye and wonder “did I really see that?” That also really adds to the creepiness, how you yourself aren’t really sure what’s real and what you imagined. It puts you on edge, looking out for every little thing that might be suspicious.

The first one is especially creepy since I would always vaguely notice it and wonder if I’d seen it right and what it was, and I only recently realized, it’s the chair cushion being pressed down and rising back up as if someone’s just sat up and down on it. Like there was an invisible person right in front of you getting up off the chair and I can’t even describe how creepy that is to me.

Also I found a stash of my Nancy Drew games in my room at the beginning of summer but of course Haunted Carousel and Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake were not part of the ones I found because those are the ones I wanted to play.
