99% Invisible just did a great piece on Sears and how they also functioned to equalize home ownership for people of color in America, because you could get A MORTGAGE AND A HOUSE through the mail. It’s called The House That Came In The Mail and it’s a wonderful history of Sears Roebuck homes as well.
It also highlights how absolutely ridiculous racism can be.
Imagine being so obsessed with if a black person can buy a goddamn nice piece of furniture that you burn catalogs and ban people from buying stamps and make an entire production about the evils of a department store. Because now Mrs. Freeman from a town over who you will never meet can have a nice couch or the Waldens can get a house or a nice newly married couple can have dishes.

That uncomfortable feeling when someone is participating in their own cultural heritage, someone else decides they aren’t, and that someone else uses stereotypes to back up why the first person isn’t “really” a part of that culture.
(Also: for people wanting to know about the “fresa” comment, it’s a Mexican Spanish slang term referring to empty-headed preppy kids who “act American” (though it literally means “strawberry”- i.e., red on the outside, white on the inside). So it’s the equivalent of calling a black person an Oreo.)
And God help these people’s reactions when they learn I’m an Anglo fluent in Spanish (as in, I speak it almost as well as I speak English) who wants to teach it to middle and high school kids for a living. (Hell, even some kids who would be classified as heritage speakers- they might not actually be fluent or may only know English since they’re third- or fourth-generation from the original Spanish speakers. I had a Puerto Rican guy in one of my college classes in the past who basically only knew Puerto Rican slang.)

I didn’t even notice it has “no white people”. They’re just people. I just saw it and thought “That’s a nice piece of artwork for Veterans’ Day.” Which, you know, is the entire point. This wasn’t about race in any way and I don’t understand why it had to be turned into that. Like are people really that pitiful? This is about honoring people who served our country. It’s a nice drawing. Let it be that.
So I’ve seen a story circulating around social media, and I figured I would do a little debunking to prevent misinformation.
In the story, a woman claiming to be a black Pediatric/Cardiac Nurse states that a racist couple prevented her from caring for their infant, resulting in the child’s death.
As the daughter of a Critical Care Nurse (the highest certification level for a Nurse), and someone that works with Hospital Security and a police department that deals with the hospital on a daily basis…….nothing in her story makes sense.
Claim: She was the only person that could perform the life-saving task.
Fact: Nurses are primarily tasked with routine patient care and assisting doctors. Even CCRNs do not perform procedures themselves, and hospitals have a Code/Crash Team that responds to any critical situation. The doctors are the ones that actually perform complex or major tasks. Had she claimed to be the Specialist On Call, that would be more believable. But she stated she’s a nurse, and therefore would NOT have been the “only person capable of performing the task”.
Claim: The parents threatened and physically assaulted her, forcing her to leave the room.
Fact: Any time patients’ family causes problems, Security is called to remove them from the immediate area. If they threaten or assault staff, Police are called. Family are not allowed to interfere with the ability of staff to provide medical care. A police report is always filed should someone assault hospital staff.
Claim: Hospital Staff were forced to stand by and watch the baby die due to the parents’ hostility.
Fact: Hospitals have a Social Worker and/or Patient Advocate present, who is there to take over as the Custodian and Guardian of patients. They represent the rights of the patient, should the parents/guardians be endangering the patient or otherwise be felt to be a danger to them.
So in conclusion, the story reads as completely false based on my personal knowledge and experience.
ETA: It seems that she removed the story from her Twitter account, further indicating that something was fishy.

Good info. I haven’t spend much time inside a hospital so some of those aspects of the story didn’t quite stand out as being glaringly strange to me, but after reading this it makes sense that the story isn’t very realistic.

That story set off my “shit that didn’t happen” sensor extremely hard, but I merely passed it by because I certainly didn’t have any substantive reason to think it didn’t.
On CNN’s “AC360″ on Friday, without using his actual name, network justice correspondent Pamela Brown offered some insights into the shooter.
According to the report, Mercer gave his writings to a survivor of the massacre, which revealed “hatred” toward black men and his struggles with the opposite sex.
“In the middle of the shooting rampage, the gunman handed his writings to a survivor to give to police according to sources. In those pages, the shooter rambled about his hatred toward black men and how he was frustrated about being a virgin unable to find a girlfriend.”
Brown went on to discussed the anti-Christianity aspect of his crime, and how he asked the victims religions before killing them.
“So far all we’ve been able to find is on a social media page that apparently belonged to him. He said he disliked organized religion but in the writings we talked about in the piece, apparently he gave no indication other than saying he associated with the dark side.”

Don’t forget how CNN touched up a selfie they used of the shooter and made him as white as possible. And from there, dozens of left-wing outlets claimed the guy was white and hardly if ever mention his mother being blacker than burnt toast.
All the victims were female? That’s a bold faced lie that shows that these people only care about using the deaths of people as propaganda. A fucking MALE army vet was shot atleast 4 times charging the guy.
