‘In Memoriam’ Just finished this up. Hand made coffin hangs on the wall with an articulated raccoon inside holding one of my classic bone flowers. This will be part of a new series and I may also offer this as a custom option for those with lost cats or dogs. You can find it on display at @redefinearts in Orlando starting October 15th.
This bone is the humerus of a swan. Although it has been slightly nibbled, the damage reveals a fascinating feature of bird bones.
Bird skeletons are highly adapted for flight; they are lightweight but also strong enough to take the stresses of flying. Many bones in birds, including this one, are pneumatized (have air spaces within them) with a honeycomb structure for increased strength.
