In Super Mario 64, there is a discrepancy between the apparent position of the lava and its actual collision detection inside the volcano in Lethal Lava Land. This can be ascertained by Ground Pounding the lava. In the main area of Lethal Lava Land and Bowser in the Fire Sea, the clouds created by Mario’s Ground Pound appear directly above the lava. Inside the volcano, however, they are below the lava, showing the incorrect collision. This results in Mario being able to stand, and even sleep in lava at the edge of certain platforms.

In Super Mario Sunshine, if you go to the last mission of Bianco Hills and balance on a rope while repeatedly using the Rocket Nozzle, then get hit by a Wind Spirit, Mario will shoot up to a great height. As he falls, he will sometimes stop in midair, looking broken. Pressing the Y button will resume the fall.
