optometrictzedek:

tumblr is massively wrong about the Amazon strike and there are a few key people trying to get the right information out and y’all are too focused on sticking it to Amazon to bother getting it right. @brainstatic started noticing yesterday that the dates people were posting were funky and @janothar started posting that even the Spanish strike isn’t starting on the 10th and yet y’all are still spreading this like it’s fact. I honestly have not seen a damn thing about the strike literally ANYWHERE but tumbr so I decided to use our good friend google and here’s what I’ve found.

On July 10, 2018, Reuters reported that the Spanish workers will participate in a 3 day strike starting on July 16. NOT July 10. The strike is also, according to this article, NOT across all of Spain or all of the EU but only at ONE location – the San Fernando warehouse. It is already the second walk out this warehouse is doing this year, but y’all weren’t even aware of the first one and now are misrepresenting this one. EuroWeekly News stated the same thing as Reuters.

As of this morning (July 11, 2018)), the Independent is reporting that activists are asking consumers not to participate in Prime Day sales to support striking workers. Not asking for a week-long boycott, just a boycott of Prime Day. The Independent also confirms Reuters’ reports that the strike is ONLY 1000 Spanish workers – it does not start on the 10th and it is not an international strike.

There are a handful of other sites reporting that the strike started on the 10th and that other EU countries are participating; however, as @brainstatic pointed out already, these all link back to the same .info site that is not reliable and is not backed by reliable news sources (unlike Reuters, which is a reliable news source). The Observer article that links to the .info site above also literally uses tumblr’s “the boycott starts on the 10th” as a source for the boycott starting on the 10th… meaning that TUMBLR started those rumors, not the Observer article, and there is no reliable source for the boycott starting on the 10th other than the fact that y’all made that shit up and some online news source picked it up and ran with it. You can’t use an article that sites you as the source as a source for your bullshit. Got it?

If you want to support the striking workers, know when they are striking and what they want from you. Know what the actual activists involved are calling for. Know when and where the strike is taking place. As of right now, the strike is ONLY in Spain, it is 3 days long starting on the 16th, and it is ONLY focused around Prime Day. It did not start yesterday on the 10th. It is primarily about raising wages and other similar issues in Spanish factories, which are unionized already. It is not about people dying in American Amazon factories. Having half-assed, half-researched boycotts here and there that do not correspond to the strikes and are not well coordinated is not going to make a point. Having an organized, well-informed, large movement is what gets your point across. So stop what you’ve been doing and do this right. Boycott Prime Day and stop spreading misinformation.

Fortunately, this is satire. The New Yorker is basically a printed “Onion”. The unfortunate part is this statement could be true and people are reading it as such due to being misinformed. While I completely agree with OP’s sentiment, these words were not uddered. Hopefully this comment will reach someone and educate them. Please learn the dangers of posting and reblogging misinformed, misinterpreted, and incorrect statements and the repercussions they have.

You know something we don’t get taught often?  Why bodies with uteri often have a slight pouche. You wanna know why? Because the uterus leans against the outside wall of the abdominal cavity. The uterus is literally making that little pouche, the belly that we call fat all the fucking time, and that’s why it’s so fucking hard to get a absolutely flat belly! And thank fuck for having a female anatomy professor who is old enough and feminist enough to not give a damn and cheerfully tell us all the details that a male professor might have thought unimportant.  Cause fuck this society that ignores organs in order to fat-shame us.

I had no idea. Like, absolutely no idea.

i did not know this at all

Because it isn’t true
@biologyweeps I think has repudiated this myth many times.

Only one time but you’re right that’s not how anatomy works.

Like that pouch there is fat, fat that lies over the muscle tissue of the stomach and far away from any present uteri.

Also quiz: how do y’all explain that the dudes and people who don’t have an uterus also have that fat deposit there I’m really curious.

Do y’all not realize how tightly packed everything is in there? Plus the fact that your fricking bladder is in front of your uterus?? If the frickin uterus could push out the abdominal wall we’d be lumpy as hell from everything else. Like come on guys. You can FEEL that it’s a fat pouch. I don’t think it’s society that’s ignoring organs, OP.

Found this on Facebook 😢📚

Please stop spreading this.

I looked into the matter at the request of a friend (and because I was considering going if it was true) and could not find any info online regarding it. So, I gave in and contacted the number to get into contact with Fred.

What I got was a person who was upset that this FALSE information has spread so virally. The Facebook OP asked if he could tell some friends and was told ok, but the information above is inaccurate. The collection is not (and never was) being liquidated. The books are not in danger of being lost or destroyed. And in actuality there are only 3.4-4 million, not 10+. The owners have, in the past, allowed a few people in, family and friends and friends of friends, to browse and buy, but not strangers.

I asked if he wanted this to continue and he said no, frankly he wished it would stop. So PLEASE pass along this sentiment, and do not contact this man further. Leave him and the books in peace!

“ most are not “

I love how leftists are oh-so-smug about their support of scientific evidence, then they post images like this and pretend like they’re peer reviewed studies.

I’ll try my best to explain the biochemical differences between genetically altered corn and unmodified corn as well as other variables such as pesticide usage, overall costs, yield and the economic outcomes. Full disclosure, I’m better suited to explain the economic reasoning, but I consulted a biochemist over this who helped me understand the difference between modified and non-modified corn. This biochemist also promised to rip me apart if I get anything wrong, so here goes nothing.

The difference is that the modified corn has been genetically altered so that it expresses a protein, Cry4Bb1. This protein is a pore forming toxin produced by Bacillus thuringiensis. This protein is toxic to insect larvae, not mammals. Therefore the modified corn, which contains this protein can be safely ingested by people, but not insects. Humans have far different metabolic pathways from insects, which allows us to ingest this protein harmlesslyThe reason we see a difference in this corn is not because squirrels can detect a difference, but because insect larvae have not yet been able to degrade the modified corn. The organic corn is far more susceptible to insects and requires far more usage of chemical pesticides.

Economically, GMO’s provide higher yields per acre. This isn’t too big of a deal for an industrialized nation like America, but in some countries like India, GMO crops are cutting losses in half.

More food, less hungry people.

image

So to answer the question, yes, I am smarter than a squirrel.

I wanted to add to this, because GMO’s are so misunderstood and the political controversy that surrounds them is based in scientific illiteracy.

One of the coolest GMO’s I know about is “golden rice.” Vitamin A deficiency is fairly rampant in parts of Asia. When children are deficient in vitamin A it results in blindness. Furthermore, Vitamin A deficiency contributes to 2 million childhood deaths each year (2012 Am J Clin Nutr, 96:658-64). Scientists genetically modified golden rice in order to provide vitamin A.

UNFORTUNATELY political opposition has delayed the release of golden rice for over a decade. And as @libertybill pointed out, no one dies from genetically modified food.

If you are against GMO’s because you think Monsanto is a big baddy (which I’m not going to pretend they haven’t done some asshole-ish things) or you think the GMO is going to cause cancer or some other stupid ass thing, please take time to educate yourself.

They always have but a lot of more people are going to try to capitalize on fear and hatred these days. Regardless of your views, please try to verify stories and get as much background info – dates, police reports, etc – before you believe them or share them as what they’re labeled. If you get corrected, post a retraction or even an apology as soon as you can.

Part of fighting for justice means knowing the truth and not being manipulated by media we already know fucked up immensely.

Do you find it hard sometimes to be a history student on Tumblr?

frederick-the-great:

Yes.

It is ridiculously frustrating and down-right infuriating.

On
one side, you have right-wing nutters (most with worryingly fascist
tendencies) who invade tags of anything related to Royalty, Germany or
Prussia. Then you have, in a similar field, people who idolize
absolutism-Monarchs-Church à la Marion Sigaut.

Also, never go
into any famous nazi tag because there is a bunch of people thinking
Goebbels was cute and that Hitler and Speer were “a thing” (Actual
nightmares).

However, it is also true that most of these
people actually do keep to themselves and have their own niches and you
only engage with them if you actually search for it and/or if it
randomly appears on your dash (which in my case it rarely does).

On
the other side, you have the “communists did no wrong” or people who
try to use history to downplay the actual damage made by communist
regimes all over the world.

But again, these people do exist
but their posts aren’t really that widespread on tumblr and when you see
them it’s usual because someone rebbloged a post rebating them.

The

posts that have real impact are the kind of “Cleopatra was black” or
“Beethoven was black” or “White People Are Evil and Everything Bad that
Happened in the World Is Their Fault” or just some blatantly wrong fact
about some historical character or event which was manipulated by social
justice people to turn some Historical character or event into a 21th
century social justice issue. (like that infamous: “Racism was dropping
the bomb on the Japanese instead of the Germans” which is so obviously
wrong at so many levels I can’t even begin to describe it)

Now,
of course that people who think Goebbels was cute or nazis or even
people who think that the DDR was a healthy regime are much more wrong,
misguided and “problematic” than someone who thinks Beethoven was black
or POC or whatever. The problem is that if I write a post going “damn
that Erich Honecker sure was great” that will probably not get 137212
notes (hopefully not). If a Nazi goes “Hitler sure was right” people are
going to go “You’re a disgusting” and it will get a few thousands
notes at most, and the large majority of them will be people agreeing
with the “you’re disgusting” comment.

Misguided and
erroneous information and interpretations being circulated in the name
of social justice have lots, lots of notes and resound throughout the
whole website which makes it much harder for anyone with actual
knowledge to fight back. And because it’s so often under the kind of “we
never learned this at school” thing or “why aren’t we talking about this”
hype, people get really very quickly on board with it.

The
problem, of course, is that most of this information and of these
interpretations are wrong. People often ignore the context and the
mindset of the period and they end up by applying their standards,
concerns, ideas to people who didn’t have – and could not have – any
idea of them. This is anachronism, it’s not good History and it’s
something historians in the last century fought a lot against.

Also, about
most of the information that tumblr believes no one knows and that
has been hidden away by “powers that be”: 1- either that information is just untrue, which
is why no one talks about it OR 2- people actually know about it and it’s
established in Academia only people on tumblr don’t know that because they
don’t bother with research and blindly believe everything someone wrote
on a post.

I am also annoyed at how people think that Academia
is a big conspiracy against POC and women – Academia has huge flaws and
you definitely have to beware when mid-century Historians talk about
race or sexuality but it’s also true that lots of academics were – and
are nowadays – very progressive. For all the historians that deny that
Frederick the Great liked men there are countless others historians that
straight up say that he was gay or that he very likely preferred men.

You can argue that wrong information is spread all over the internet and I agree but this website has a way of spreading that information really fast and it’s not gonna stay buried in some theory-conspiracy website, it’s gonna be moving around and endlessly reblogged.
